The Big Chill

Oh mercy!  It’s been so cold here in Florida!  We are having an unusually long stretch of cold days and even colder nights.  Record breaking lows.  There have been  several days this past week where our highest temps  haven’t even reached 50 degrees  Fahrenheit and they are predicting 45 will be the high again  for Saturday and Sunday!
I know to some of you, 45 would be considered a heat wave but for this Florida girl who primarily lives in shorts, tee shirts  and bare feet around the house probably 10 1/2 months of the year, 45 degrees is mighty nippy.
Brrrr.
Brrrrrr.
And more Brrrrrrrr!
I just want to stay inside and hibernate as much as possible but even with the heater set between 72 and 74 degrees, I still can’t get warm.
Check out  these photos  my hubby took yesterday morning  of  the ice he saw in the orange groves and strawberry fields close to the house in Hooterville.  We are not accustomed to seeing this too often.

Growers use rotating sprinklers in freezing weather to place a thin coating of ice on the strawberry plants and orange trees to insulate them and limit damage to the fruit and new blossoms.

Just three words from this self-admitted cold weather wimp…

Please hurry summer!

The weather here in the Florida Panhandle is perfect for a little snow. Haven't seen the stuff since 1993 but there is a chance we will get a sprinkling of it tonight. That will be exciting. We always get a few weeks during winter where it gets real chilly, maybe in the 20's but this is the first time in years it has gotten this cold (tonight it may go down to the teens). I am a true southern girl and have never adjusted to cold weather. I am with you on the hibernating - I just want to curl up on the sofa with a blanket, fireplace glowing and a cup of hot tea and a good book - I could stay that way all winter!

We drove down to southern FL from NY last week. We were lucky to gets 70's during the day, but it was quite chilly at night! Driving up it was 43 degrees in St. Augustine area! Poor you! The strawberry thing is amazing! Hope you get your warm back!

My heart is with you! Im a farmer's wife here in cold North Dakota (23 below zero this morning). But I can rest knowing our crops are off- I hope everything works out for the best for the Florida Farmers and their families. Best of luck! Your blog is wonderful by the way- thanks for letting me look!

Shari,

Yes, I did hear on the news about the record breaking cold spell you are having. I was shocked! We got a light dusting of snow here last night. Another storm is moving in over the weekend, and it is supposed to be VERY windy and cold. With the wind it will be in the single digits!!!

Oh my, I hope things warm up there very soon. I hate to think what that will do to the orange and grapefruit prices. I hope you are getting lots of work done and that you have a good furnace in your house in Hooterville. Hugs, Cindy S.
