Struggling

It’s been almost 3 weeks since I moved to the house in Hooterville  and for the past few days, I have been struggling with bouts of homesickness.  However, that’s not really what this post’s title is referring to.

One of the things I am finding as I unpack and try to decorate the house in Hooterville is how quick and easy some rooms are coming together and how difficult others are.

I realize it is going to take time for me to get a feel for how we live in this house, what works and what doesn’t,  but one of the rooms I am really struggling with is the master bedroom.

Long story short…  unfortunately, the only wall the bed will fit on is a window wall.  I hate the fact that by the time the headboard is added, the whole lower half of the window is covered so, in an effort to minimize having the sunlight and view blocked by a solid headboard,  I bought a vintage-looking metal  headboard.    I wanted a white one but the price was really right on this particular headboard  and it  only came in antique brass or pewter (gray).

I picked the pewter but I had every intention of painting it white.   Well, that was until I actually saw it in the room.  Now, I’m not so sure.

The headboard is the same exact width as the window so if I paint it white, it is going to  blend in with the shutters.  I can’t decide if that is a good thing…or a bad thing.

I know it’s looking a little very boring right now but hopefully, that will all change as the room progresses.   Ultimately, when all is said and done, I would like this room to have a coastal cottage feel.  Light, airy and bright.  I plan to use some shells and beachy artwork.  I’m also thinking about introducing a few touches of lime green to add a bit of  pizzazz and interest to all the aqua and white.

Based on what I think I want this room to be when it’s done, does anyone have opinions about painting (or not painting) the headboard, or any other decorating suggestions?

Meanwhile, I’ve also been working on the “pink and girly” guest room.  That room has been so much   fun and extremely easy for me to pull together.   No struggles there  so it’s almost done!

The reveal will be coming soon!

My immediate thought was, paint it white, but then...maybe you should add some of the other accessories, see how it looks and then decide? Love it so far, tho!!

Hi Shari. In my last home my bed had to be in front of the window also. I hung drapes on a rod bigger than the window which framed the headboard. Everyone really liked it. If you did that then you could have the white headboard of your dreams because the fabric would add another layer. Just a thought.

I second CeeKay's comment. I have a window with a bed in front of it as well. Hung the curtains farther out to make it frame the headboard. LOVE IT NOW!

LOVE YOUR HOUSE.

You asked for my opinion. I say do not paint the headboard, I think it looks fantastic just the way it is.
I Love the feel of that room.

Hi Shari,

Oooh, pretty! I know you aren't fond of curtains...... but, I like the suggestion to hang a rod farther out to frame the window. If you use a sheer gauzy type of material, and pull them to the sides, I bet that would make the bed stand out. Love the color!!

I am another one that says to leave the bed pewter...the walls in my bedroom are about the same shade as yours...and I have lime accents, too. It is such a cheery room.

I think you should leave the headboard as is, the room looks fine as is.

CaraRose...the paint color is called "Aqua Frost" from the Waverly line of colors at Lowe's. In person, I think it appears softer than these photos make it look.

Hi Shari,
I am sorry that you are having a hard time with your move. One thing I can say, we took our time to set up our new home. I would go to Home Goods, and Southern Hospitality and looked at all kinds of websites and magazines for ideas.
When we lived in our old home, we had our bed in front of a single window. We ended up putting a drapery rod that was the width of the bed and drapes that covered the whole window. It was a great illusion and hid the single window that was off center. I'm sure you will find the answer. Just give yourself some time and one day you will go in there and "see" what you need to do.

Hi Shari,
I love the pewter headboard and the idea of hanging sheer curtains to frame it.
My dad was in the US Army which meant lots of moves. My mother came to the conclusion that it takes a good six weeks to get acclimated after moving. I hope you feel at home soon!

I love the look of the pewter headboard and I would play up the windows with your window coverings. Maybe keep it light and air-y to give the feel of the ocean breeze gently blowing soft curtains.

Hi Shari....

YUMMY! Your room feels so soft and restful.... Personally, I'd leave the bed as is... I like that it contrasts with the shutters........which are BEEE.U.TI.FUL, by the way. :-) And, I'd skip the lime.... I think it would take away from the peacefulness of the room..........it makes me just want to rest..........but, that's just my Humble Opinion.

Love that pink and black rug. I LOVE black backgrounds on home dec. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.........delish.

Huggies!

Spence

PS... can't wait for the reveal.

I just found your blog and I love it! When I ran across this post thought I felt I had to comment on it as it could have been written by me except that we moved 5 weeks ago. In our old house in town, our bedroom was the biggest in the house, but the other rooms ran small. In our 'new' 1943 farmhouse, our bedroom is the smallest in the house. The only wall our bed will fit on is the window wall IF we want any kind of bedside table. So, we decided on a metal headboard for the exact same reason. It was silver and I thought about white, but the wide moldings around the window and the blinds are all white and I was afraid you would lose the headboard! So, I grabbed my old standby Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze and ended up with a headboard that looks black. I LOVE it! My room isn't coming together very quickly either and most of my supplies are boxed up somewhere. Looking over your blog dates makes me have more confidence that I CAN do this! LOL
