A Quart of Black Paint

In my previous post,  I shared photos of two of exterior doors at the house in Hooterville that got a fresh coat of black paint, the sunroom door and the laundry room door
This weekend I was able to get the front door of the house painted.  Not a moment too soon either.  It was in bad shape.  The wood was very dry.  Any protective coating that it might have once had on it was long gone due to exposure to the elements over the years.  In addition, the stain color just blended right in with the brick exterior.

After a couple coats of black paint, it looks a bit better and will suffice until we have the time and funds to start sprucing up the outside of the house.

After painting the three doors, there is still about 1/3 quart of black paint left.
Hmmm…  since I can’t replace the vanity and medicine chest/mirror  in the guest bathroom right now, I’m wondering if I should make them my next painting project with the leftover black paint?

Below is a photo of how the bathroom looked  when we bought the house.    Although I detest the terracotta tiles on the floor in this bathroom, I decided  they might actually work to my advantage (for now)  if I repeated the French Country cottage look I am going for  in the breakfast room and the yet-to-be-completed office here in this bathroom too.

Take a look at what I’ve done so far and give me your opinion on whether the vanity and medicine chest/mirror should stay white, or whether they would be better painted black.
The yellow walls got a fresh coat of paint. These photos don’t reflect much of a difference in paint color but  I actually chose a more buttery/golden yellow than the lemony yellow that was in here previously.  We replaced the old, short toilet with a new, taller toilet.  I found a pretty blue and cream toile shower curtain on eBay.   The blue and cream runner came from T.J.Maxx.  I found the  iron and wood corner étagère on sale at    J. C. Penney’s online catalog site.

The wall on the other side of the vanity…before.

I replaced the oak shelves with a shelf/towel bar that matches the corner  étagère.  The wood  on the shelves of these two pieces is a reddish tone and coordinates nicely with the the floor.  (I still need accessories on the shelves and some art!)  I found the little iron stool at Marshalls and I may re-cover the black tone-on-tone fabric seat in a blue (or blue & yellow) French country type fabric.

So what do you think?  Should I paint the vanity base and medicine chest/mirror black?
I also would like some suggestions for a  window treatment for the window over the toilet because I’m stumped.  There is a blue toile valance on eBay that matches the shower curtain but I’m wondering if that would be “too much”?
Can you have too much toile?    ;)

Very nice makeovers! I love the front door in black - it looks stunning!

What a great transformation the front door went thru! I love it! As for the white vanity in the bathroom, I would go for it and paint it black. Whatever you decide, I bet it'll look great.:)

I like our bath window naked. Don't like our old curtains at all. Maybe you can test out a few things without spending anything. I don't know about the black but the white vanity sure doesn't do anything for me. If your spousal unit id OK with it. Paint it black. Better: Have him paint it black.

Our bath windows are bare as well, since we live in the woods. I like the black accents in the bath, and think they play well off the white mirror and vanity. I would leave as is.

I hope you'll drop by AtticMag and give JaneT some advice for her headboard to bench project.

I like the door painted black. It makes a more modern statement. I like to have a black accent in each room as a grounding accessory. We recently painted one wall of our kitchen licorice black. It actually looks pretty cool.

Although I am a paint it black kind of girl, I think the white looks good with the black accents...your shower curtain is too light to go black on the vanity and mirror, I think. But, I would put black knobs on the vanity....that might tie it in a little better...but then again....it is your house. You need to be happy with it!!

The front door looks very nice painted black. As for the vanity, I think I would change the knobs black as well, and leave the vanity itself white. I really think the "House in Hooterville" is coming along very nice. It's fun watching everything come together.

Hi Shari,

The front door looks great! As for the vanity and mirror, I would leave them white. I love the black accents though. I would go for the toile window curtain too. The black accents give it the french country look. Once you get some more accessories, I think it will dress up that corner.

Things are coming along so nicely. I myself like the white vanity, but maybe in the future you could add a granite counter top to accent the french look??!?!? I'm certainly not a decorator, so I look at magazines and decorating books from the library. Replacing the knobs, like others suggested would tie it together.

Too funny, I just did a post today about painting our front doors black. I love them!

What a transformation a little black paint can make. Your door looks awesome! I think black doors really make a statement.

I say definitely paint the vanity and mirror black in the bathroom. I'm thinking of painting the cabinets black in one of our bathrooms too. We're soon to be redoing 3 bathrooms so I'm sure one of them will end up black.

Take care and have a wonderful week!

Love the makeover! I would definitely paint the bathroom cabinets black. I think it would tie everything together.

I think I would leave the bthrm cabinet white and add black knobs like others have suggested. How about a white venetian blind above the window. It could stay pulled up and look very nice or pull it down when needed. I wouldn't go with the matching valance, myself. Your black doors all look wonderful. Your Hooterville house is really looking GOOD!

I would leave the white vanity mirror as the vanity. It looks soft now. The black is great as an accent in the bathroom, but I think painting the mirror would be overkill. Yes, I would order the matching valance to go with the shower curtain. You know, I love what you have done already with this bathroom, especially the black striped rug! Oh, and the front door looks great black! Follow your instincts...they have been great!

Great post and photos
If colours were people the yellow would be the happy gang – orange, its close neighbour in the colour spectrum, would be the go-lucky crew. If you need something positive in your life, these are the colours that you should look to use for the positive energy and a more invigorated and energy-filled approach to life

Your doors look great. I have to repaint our doors this year too.

I think the cabinet would look great black and the blue toile too would look good on the window. I don't think it would be too much.

Shari, Your door is a killer, very rich looking. NOw as for the bathroom vanity, my sister has the black granite mixed a little bit with dark browns in it, and she has the white vanity..... It looks superb. So my suggestion go out and start looking for dark granite, and see what you think.. I wish I can go over to my sister house and take a picture of it.. but I won't be going over until next weekend.

I would paint the vanity base and med. cabinet black. There is enough light in that room with the natural light from the window the while toilet and the light colored walls.

I think the black will bring out the blue in the toile better and bring out the accessories more.

I would put the toile valance on the window. A valance is not too much and toile is beautiful. Again, it would look beautiful with the black.

I love your ideas and you and your husband are doing an amazing job on this house.
